Education
Education is one of the key issues within Maastro lab. At Maastricht University, Maastro lab is involved in education within the Faculties of Medicine, Health Sciences and Molecular Life Sciences. In addition, Maastro Lab also teaches a block of 75 teaching hours at the Technical University of Eindhoven (TuE) and contributes to the education of Radiation oncology residents (AGIOS) of Maastro Clinic. The education at Maastricht University's Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences has a strong international identity and outlook. With its educational contribution, Maastro lab strives to create opportunities for innovative education, and to stimulate talented students to develop a critical scientific view, relevant to today's society.
The educational roles of the Maastro lab staff members are diverse and include both tutoring small groups of students during journal clubs and assignments in a “problem-based learning (PBL)” setting and lecturing. In a Problem-Based Learning environment, students analyze problems that are also central to the research carried out at Maastricht University. They conduct discussions, exchange knowledge and formulate their learning goals as a group. This motivates them to do research themselves. By actively addressing a number of issues, students better grasp the theory and learn to apply their insights to various questions. Tutors participate in the tutorial groups. They guide the group process, ask critical, substantive questions, share their knowledge and support students when needed.
Maastro lab is also responsible for the coordination of several teaching modules.
Currently, we actively participate as lecturers and tutors in the following blocks:
- Master Molecular Life Sciences block 2.1 ”Molecular approaches to scientific research”
- Master Molecular Life Sciences block 1.1 ”Molecular mechanisms in disease and health”.
- Master molecular Life sciences block 1.2 "Molecular screening, diagnostics and therapy in disease”
- Bachelor Molecular Life Sciences, block 3.1 “De zieke cel”
- Bachelor Medicine, block 2.6 “Oxygen and Cancer”
- Master Biomedical Engineering ‘Cancer and Radiation Biology’ (Technical University Eindhoven)
- Molecular Biology and Radiobiology for Medical Residents in Radiation Oncology (AGIOS)
Next to its role in education in several blocks as indicated above, Maastro lab also offers scientific training positions at the level of the Junior and Senior Research Master (Molecular life sciences), Medicine (WESP, IT track, A-KO) and for Bachelors MLO/HLO.
Training of staff
To guarantee a high quality of teaching, Maastro staff members continuously follow supplementary training. Staff members have the “PGO”certificate allowing them to act as tutor in the PBL setting. In 2011, Jan Theys also obtained the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) certificate. With the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO), Maastricht University (UM) aims to identify the didactic competences of their teaching staff and where necessary, to broaden and to deepen these. This way the UM tries to guarantee the quality of its teaching in order to reach her mission “Leading in Learning”. Other staff members will also follow this course.
